“I started off listening to hardcore/punk music,” reflects Mikey Maramag, the one-man musical powerhouse behind electronic alterego Blackbird Blackbird, “and got introduced to electronic music after listening to Aphex Twin. Sound-wise, I have been really getting into house music and techno, so it has moved more towards a dance-floor oriented aesthetic.”
Mikey’s sound contains more of a lightness-of-touch than hardcore stalwarts such as Aphex Twin, however – something which is reflected in his list of influences. “I really love American Football,” he says, “My Bloody Valentine, Burial, and Apparat.” A pretty diverse roster there – all of which transmutes into a self-honed sound which Mikey describes as “eclectic, poppy, fun, relaxing, soulful and trippy.”
“I look up to any producer making stellar tracks,” Mikey explains, reflecting on how he fits into present electronic scenes – either in his native Oakland or beyond. “I am digging the sounds of Sun Glitters and also this amazing band from Santa Cruz called Old Arc.”
While enthusiastic about such contemporaries, he is also thrilled to have worked alongside musical heroes. “I played a festival with Morrissey and Cut Copy in Sweden, Hultsfred Festival,” he enthuses “That was unreal. I had to cancel a couple of shows in Canada with Foxes in Fiction because I was stuck in Berlin – still bummed I couldn't go.” Take a listen to Blackbird Blackbird and we’re sure you’ll agree – Berlin really missed out that day.
